To keep these in check, the body has antioxidant defense mechanisms that it can unleash to neutralize the circulating free radicals. But antioxidants are found in high numbers in natural foods like fruit and vegetables, too.

Strawberries, for example, are believed to have one of the highest contents of ascorbic acid, more commonly known as vitamin C[iii]. Vitamin C has high antioxidant activity and is well known for its supportive role in the immune system. Research has shown that vitamin C can prevent and treat both respiratory and systemic infections[iv].

Beetroot is also renowned for its antioxidant content. It is a source of nitrate, which can act as an antioxidant agent[v], but it also contains potent betalains that can scavenge free radicals. The nitrate content of beetroot means it may help to prevent and manage high blood pressure[vi].

Cranberries also contain potent bioactive molecules that have strong antioxidant activity, called polyphenols[vii]. Natural pigments called lutein and zeaxanthin can protect against the disease, which can be found in some fruits and vegetables. A pilot study by Li et al., (2021) found that the consumption of 28g of goji berries 5 times a week for 90 days increased macular pigment optical density, a biomarker for AMD. That means goji berries could help to prevent or delay the onset of the eye condition[x].

The high antioxidant content of blueberries has also been shown to help slow down eye conditions like retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration[xi]. However, blueberries have also recently been found to improve cognitive function in healthy, older adults[xii].

A 2013 study involving 58 non-diabetics with knee osteoarthritis, aimed to assess the effectiveness of tart cherry juice in treating pain and other features of the condition. The results found that consuming two 8 oz bottles of tart cherry juice every day for six weeks, provided some symptom relief for knee osteoarthritis[xv].

But cherries can also aid post-workout recovery because they are naturally rich in potassium. Research has shown that tart cherry juice can reduce pain and quicken strength recovery after exercise. It also reduces inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers[xvi].

Pomegranates can also aid muscle recovery according to a study by Ammar et al., (2016). They found that elite weightlifters, consuming pomegranate juice during their weightlifting session and for 48 hours, experience reduced muscle soreness and pain, which accelerates their recovery and improves their weightlifting performance[xvii].

Pineapples are also great for inflammation because they contain a digestive enzyme, bromelain, which has both anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Research by Insuan et al., (2021) found that purified bromelain could potentially treat inflammatory diseases[xviii].
